Opening Remarks

1:35pm – 2:25pm:

Gauging the Climate: Capital Looking to Houston

With the influx of private equity, institutional investors, and international funds, there are large-dollar players in the Houston market looking to take advantage of value-add properties. Who are these financiers and how are deals getting done?

2:30pm – 2:50pm:

The Devil in the Details: Small Clues that Signal Big Problems in Your Portfolio

You can’t stop a hurricane, but you can prepare for one. If you could predict how the buildings in your portfolio would respond in a storm event, you could take measures to reinforce structural weaknesses and drastically improve the resiliency of your portfolio. Structural forensics expert Jane Powell, PE, will discuss the small “tells” that may indicate vulnerability in the structure of a building, and how to train your on-site staff to recognize and report them. With real-world examples from before and after Hurricane Harvey, Ms. Powell will demonstrate practical ways to protect the value of your portfolio.

2:50pm – 3:10pm:

Networking Break

3:10pm – 4:00pm:

At the Intersection of Retail & Industrial

E-commerce, logistics and distribution centers are fueling the intersection of Houston’s industrial and retail markets. What factors are playing a role in where these product types are going? How does Houston measure up with e-commerce giants like Amazon putting distribution facilities in the city? Expert panelists will discuss where the opportunities lie and where the market is headed.

4:00pm – 4:50pm:

Taking the Temperature of Houston: New Development or Asset Absorption Across Property Types

What types of projects are coming to fruition in Houston? Who is developing them, and what are their leasing strategies? What property types are seeing absorption of pre-existing assets? Expert panelists will examine the post-Harvey market conditions that are causing the food groups to be at different stages in the cycle and what this means for rent growth, the development pipeline, and more.

4:50pm – 5:00pm:

Next Generation Awards Presentation

Across the country, Connect Media’s Next Generation Awards recognized young leaders, from California, NY, Texas and Nationally, chosen from more than 450 nominations from all sectors of the commercial real estate industry. These young leaders are making big contributions to our industry and are likely to be influential for a long time — because of their talent, drive and fresh ideas. We are pleased to present some of these winners their awards live at Connect Houston.

It is critical that we all take the emerging challenge presented by the Coronavirus seriously. We should remain calm and await more information to be provided by health experts. Clearly, there needs to be an awareness of the potential impact on the CRE industry from an economic perspective. We are watching the rapidly evolving situation to determine the best approach to our business and prepare plans based on information and recommendations from health officials. We ask those planning to attend conferences take the necessary precautions to help prevent the spread of the virus. We will look for ways to help educate those in the CRE industry and work with our event venue partners to create the safest environment possible. Some of the recommendations to protect yourself offered by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) include:
  • Frequently wash hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Avoid touching your nose, eyes or mouth without first washing your hands
  • Use tissue when sneezing or coughing and dispose of immediately
  • Avoid close contact with individuals showing signs of fever or persistent cough
If you don’t feel well take all of the above steps and
  • Seek the advice of your doctor and call ahead for appointments
  • Refrain from unnecessary contact with family members or pets
  • Stay home or work remotely
